Hypokalaemic periodic paralysis secondary to subclinical hyperthyroidism: an uncommon cause of acute muscle paralysis

Hypokalaemic periodic paralysis secondary to subclinical hyperthyroidism is an uncommon clinical phenomenon characterised by lower limb hypokalaemia in the background of hyperthyroidism. In this article, we report a patient who presented with progressive muscle weakness that was refractory potassium replacement therapy. He has no diarrhoea, reduced appetite and not taking any medication can cause wasting. Although he clinically euthyroid, his thyroid function test revealed His 24-hour urine level normal, which makes rapid transcellular shift as possible cause. successfully treated supplements, non-selective beta-blockers anti-thyroid medication. This case aimed share hypokalaemic hyperthyroidism, our knowledge, only few been reported literature.
